Pervasive Systems Group
Rapid advances in technology have enabled a new generation of tiny, inexpensive, networked sensors and actuators. Embedding and networking millions of such intelligent objects into an environment creates a digital skin or wireless network of smart objects. Each object is capable of capturing physical information about its immediate space, cooperate with its neighbors, reason about its impact, and summarize the immense amounts of low-level information to produce data representative of the overall environment, and even actuate if needed. Pervasive data will change how these intelligent objects dynamically pool information, cooperate under severe constraints and reliably interact and control the physical world.

Seamless integration of computing with the physical world via sensors and actuators and computing systems will provide the society higher living standards, greater safety, more comfort and efficiency in a sustainable world. Emerging applications include environmental monitoring, health, sport, transport, public and industrial safety, manufacturing plants and ambient assisted living. The increasing complexity of such systems can be seen across all these domains. This places strong demands on the needs for advanced new technologies for monitoring and control as well as the underpinning methodologies and theories.
